The Charles Darwin Foundation of Canada is dedicated to promoting conservation, education and scientific research in the Galapagos Islands. All donations to CDF Canada through Planeterra directly support the Green Sea Turtle conservation program. Implemented by the Charles Darwin Research Station, this is an ecological project monitoring four of the most important nesting sites of this endangered species. Estimated worldwide populations have declined 50-80% due to harvesting of eggs and adult females, mortality related to marine fisheries and degradation of marine and nesting habitat.

Main objectives of this project are:

  • Estimate the size of the green turtle nesting colony in Quinta Playa
  • Study the effects of human activities such as tourism, fishing and garbage on the green turtle population
  • Promote the conservation of green turtles
  • Share results with Galapagos National Park in order to protect and conserve sea turtles
