Seva Canada Society is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to the elimination of preventable and treatable blindness in India, Nepal, Tibet and Tanzania. Planeterra supports Seva’s work in Tibet. Tibet has one of the highest rates of blindness in the world, caused mostly by cataract. Many people affected by blindness live in remote areas far away from eye care services. They are often unaware of available treatments, or simply unable to reach a hospital because of poverty and lack of transportation. Each year, Seva organizes microsurgical eye camps in rural regions of Tibet. With scattered populations spread across great distances, surgical eye camps are the most efficient way to treat the high rate of cataract. Every year, 3500 sight restoring surgeries are conducted in Seva-sponsored eye camps, but this volume needs to be tripled to eliminate preventable blindness in Tibet.

2007: $15,000 was raised through Planeterra to fund one eye camp to be held at the Charity Hospital in Xi Ning, the capital city of Amdo in September 2008. The government has committed to gathering patients and providing free transportation. Seva will be sending an experienced team of Tibetan eye care specialists along with medical supplies to do the surgeries. It is estimated that this eye camp will provide sight-restoring surgeries to 300 people.

Our goal is to support one eye camp each year and with your support we can continue to give the gift of sight to men, women and children in Tibet.
