Project: CORNERSTONE FOUNDATION
Location: SAN IGNACIO, BELIZE

The Cornerstone Foundation is a registered non-profit humanitarian service organization that offers a variety of valuable programs to people in need in San Ignacio, Belize. The programs offered through Cornerstone are based on specific needs within the community.

Cornerstone provides the following programs which are managed by local staff and international volunteers:

Relief & Aid Program - Cornerstone's weekly food program delivers food to the homes of seniors, the ill and disabled community members. Also children whose families cannot afford to provide them with lunch are able to participate in Cornerstones' lunch feeding program.

HIV/AIDS Education - HIV infection in Belize is the highest in Central America. This program raises community awareness of high-risk behaviors and provides support for those who are living with AIDS.

Disabilities - This program serves individuals and families in the community by helping them to meet the physical, social, emotional, and material needs of the disabled.

Women's Issues - This program encourages independence and self-sufficiency among women by providing workshops on self-esteem building, ending domestic violence, training peer counselors, and job skills training.

Literacy - Cornerstone's Literacy and English Second Language classes are offered to children, adults, developmentally disabled students which improves their ability to participate more fully in Belizean society and the economy.

PLANETERRA DONATION BREAKDOWN
2004: $300 USD - Our donation provided funds to print 300 English Language manuals for students participating in Cornerstone's literacy classes. Cornerstone's Literacy Program provides literacy and English Second Language (ESL) classes to adults, children, developmentally disabled and otherwise handicapped students in San Ignacio and surrounding villages.

2005: $800 USD - Prior to Planeterra's support, Cornerstone relied solely on the solicitation of a few local donations to provide basic needs for two children living with disabilities and in poverty. Due to the fact that the Belizean government offers no assistance to children living with disabilities there were many children that were not receiving what they need to survive. Planeterra's donation was used to purchase and distribute occupational toys which are being used to develop basic motor skills for children with Cerebral Palsy and Downs Syndrome. Funds were also used to purchase basic items of food, milk, nutritional supplements, diapers, vitamins and medicines to last several months for those in need. Thanks to our donors our 2005 donation has been used to provide support to 18 children with disabilities.

2006: $1,000 USD - This donation is being used to support Cornerstone's Food & Relief Program, Disabilities Program and HIV/AIDS Education programs. $250 USD will be used to provide a warm meal to children who have been referred by school principals as having no food to eat during the school day. $500 USD will be used to provide medicine to members of the community infected with HIV/AIDS and other needed items to those affected by domestic violence. $250 USD will be used to purchase educational outreach materials to promote the HIV/AIDS education in San Ignacio.
