Project: FOUNDATION FOR NATURE AND HUMANITY
Location: Trinidad/Baracoa, CUBA

The Foundation for Nature and Humanity is Cuba’s only environmental non-governmental organization. Through Planeterra, we support their “Schools and Nature” program which brings together elementary school principals, teachers and students in creating a natural green space on their school grounds. The children are involved in all stages of the hands-on planning, design and implementation of the project. The project allows them to decide what to incorporate into their green space including native trees and shrubs, fruit trees, organic vegetable gardens, composting and medicinal plant gardens.

Approximately 2,000 people will benefit from this project, including 350 students (plus another 70 students with each new school year); 50 teachers and staff; and at least 1,500 community members.

Planeterra Donation Breakdown
2007: We raised a total of $4,000 for this project. $3,000 of the donation will fund an entirely new schoolyard greening project in Baracoa which includes the development of an Environmental Education Campaign, Teacher training, Design and Planning Workshops, schoolyard blueprints, gardening tools, plants and seedlings.

The remaining $1,000 will used to complete the final stages of the schoolyard greening process for a school in Trinidad that we began funding in 2006 - providing construction materials, tools, plants, seedlings and simple playground equipment.
