Joel Callañaupa works with Planeterra as a field manager for our MIF/IDB Project based in Peru. His fluency in Quechua is an invaluable skill that enables him to work closely with the indigenous peoples in the rural Andean communities of Peru. For three years Joel has been working on economic development projects with NGOs and the public sector, specifically under the National Rural Community Tourism Program, a component of Peru’s Ministry of Commerce and Tourism (MINCETUR).
Joel completed his post-secondary studies in tourism at the national university in his native Cusco, Peru. His education also included specialized courses in economic development and tourism planning and management through other universities in Peru and Spain. His main focus is rural development and he believes that tourism is an effective tool to conserve natural resources and generate economic alternatives.
