Project: KENYA WATER PROJECT
Location: KOWUOR VILLAGE, KENYA

Through Planeterra we are working to raise funds to install water tanks in a remote village in western Kenya. As in many regions of Africa, water scarcity is an issue. Women from the village must walk several kilometers to reach a borehole where they pump their water from the nearest well. The time and energy spent hauling water for survival could instead be invested in education, further agricultural production and other economic activities.

Kowuor Village is home to 20 families who are members of the Luo tribe, the second largest ethnicity in Kenya. With no access to electricity, villagers use kerosene lamps for light and wood fires for cooking. The village also has one common school and a health clinic. Families in this region are farmers whose main agricultural products include groundnuts, corn, sweet potatoes, cassava and limited cotton production due to lack of water and adverse weather conditions.

Through G.A.P Adventures, travellers are provided with an opportunity to participate in a home stay in the Kowuor Village. With funds raised on G.A.P Adventure’s Cultural Kenya tour, we have already assisted with the installation of two 2,500 litre water tanks which are located in the centre of the village.

Planeterra Donation
Our goal is to provide access to water for more families in this village and throughout the region. Just $480 USD is needed to cover the cost of one 2,500 litre tank, 2 bags of cement, rain gutters, transport and a technician.
