Egypt is the home of the oldest civilization on earth, with 60 centuries of advanced architecture, arts, government, and some of the world’s most cherished monuments. Luxor is at the heart of Egypt’s ancient civilization and was once the capital of Egypt’s upper and lower kingdoms.
Luxor is now a busy Nile port with millions of travelers visiting, many on brief stays via cruise boats. As a result, the large majority of travelers never see local Egyptian realities, where average citizens live hand to mouth. The public educational system is inadequate and even the most basic opportunities for youth are almost entirely lacking.
Your donation has established a new community library that offers youth programs in the village of El Tod, just outside of the center of Luxor, Egypt. While El Tod is very close to the hustle and bustle of Luxor’s busy tourism trade, its residents do not benefit from tourism. Education in poor villages near Luxor is so poor community-based education programs are urgently needed. Our local partner offers early childhood education at very low prices for local people. As a community center, their goal is to be a center of learning. Your support will help local families to learn basic English, critical if they are to benefit from the tourism trade, and develop new youth centered programs in their community center. Your donation will also help scale this project to offer more educational programs to the local community.
Planeterra plans to support long-lasting sustainable, community education on the periphery of one of Egypt’s top tourism destinations. The Luxor Community Education Center is open for G Adventures passengers to visit during their trips. Passengers are requested to bring basic, children’s reading materials for the library (please check with G Adventures to determine what is needed), and a local meal of falafel will be served by the villagers during the visit. A variety of new project goals will be announced as the center develops.
