kowour village, kenya

The Kowour and Orire communities are located in the province of Nyanza, Kenya. Kuwour village is approximately 4km inland in the hills from the town of Kendu. Bay, on the Lake Victoria Coast. There are approximately 1000 families in the area, all of whom live a simple, rural, agricultural, traditional way of life (no modern farming techniques are used at all, only traditional ones. This is their second biggest need. Education and training in modern farming methods). In Kowour village, Planeterra directly impacts the lives of 15 - 20 of these families of the Luo tribe, the second largest ethnicity in Kenya.

None of the homes have electricity, and the locals use kerosene lamps for light, and wood fires for cooking.

Water scarcity is an issue, and the locals spend quite a bit of time walking several kilometres to a nearby borehole where they pump their water from the nearest well. As a lot of time and energy is used to transport water for survival, the villagers are unable to advance themselves, with further agricultural production or other economic activities, because time is simply spent fetching water.

Gap Adventures began supporting the communities through bringing several groups on their Cultural Kenya trip to stay with the local families. Planeterra continues to support this project that has been able to purchase and assist with the installation of six 2500 Litre water tanks, which are now located centrally for many families to use and benefit from.
