A penny or two for Peru: Kids Helping Kids
“Our family started planning a trip to Peru and Ecuador last winter. We had read about kids raising money for people in Africa and we thought it would be cool if we raised money for a needy organization in an area that we planned on visiting. Trip planners at G Adventures told us about Planeterra Foundation and Planeterra said that
House of the People of the Sun (Inti Runakunaq Wasin in Quechua) in Cusco could use our help. We thought it would be really great to help these kids, many of whom do not have homes or parents to care for them, plus it would be exciting for us.
We started raising money through our church, but soon realized a lot of people wanted to help. We made posters and flyers and did many presentations at church and school and for other groups that we are involved with. We also talked with family, friends and our parent’s work. As it turned out raising money for needy kids was not hard. We raised $2,933 and donated a ton of toothbrushes from our dentist. It was very exciting to tell the people at Planeterra how much we raised! They were almost as excited as us. We were invited to tour the center in Cusco and to help serve Christmas rolls and hot chocolate to kids who came to Cusco from the countryside at Christmastime. We did not know what to expect and we were a little nervous but our experience that night was so amazing! Seeing the kids’ faces and getting a big smile when we gave them a roll made us really happy! It was a great Christmas! We hope the money we raised will benefit House of the People of the Sun and help the kids that go to the center.
After visiting Cusco our family explored Machu Picchu, the Amazon jungle, the Galapagos Islands and the northern highlands of Ecuador. We had so much fun and think of our trip all the time. We hope to do another fundraiser for our next trip. Where should we go?”
