- Leslie Oman Peru travel chronicles #1: lima and cuzco

Hola
from Peru! Lima
Peru, with over 8 million inhabitants is a big city full of contrasts. The air
was heavy and polluted, so much so, the ocean was not visible while driving
along the shore. I stayed in Hotel
Stefano’s near Miraflores Central Park which came alive each night with an
artisans market and street entertainment.
My first impression was how delicious Peruvian food is!

Day
2, I met with my G Adventures guide, Geraldine, and four travel
companions. We flew to Cuzco which
is situated 3395 m above sea level.
Central Cuzco is beautiful and we stayed in the cozy Hostal Corihuasi
right by the Plaza de Armas... I
chose to spend a week in and around Cuzco prior to attempting to hike the Inca
Trail to do some volunteer work, gain a deeper understanding of Peruvian
culture, and to acclimatize to the altitude.
In
the first several days I was adventurous and tried many traditional Peruvian
drinks/foods including Pisco Sour (pisco, like clear brandy); plus lime with whipped
egg white on top and drops of bitter to finish it off!); Causa Rellena Con
Pollo (golden potatoes mashed with lime juice and stuffed with chicken); Beef
Heart; Vegetariano Crepes; Ceviche
of Corvino (spotted white fish in lemon w/aji peppers, shelled grains of maize,
onion & sweet potato); and finally, Andean trout with Inka Herbs at a
restaurant over looking the Square with an incredible Peruvian quartet playing
in the back ground - delicioso!
