Cuba Schoolyard Project
Location: Trinidad & Baracoa, Cuba Through Planeterra, we support a schoolyard greening program that brings together elementary school principals, teachers and students in creating a natural green space on their school grounds. The children are involved in all stages of the hands-on planning, design and implementation of the project. The project allows them to decide what to incorporate into their green space, including native trees and shrubs, fruit trees, organic vegetable gardens, composting and medicinal plant gardens. To date we have developed two schoolyard programs in Trinidad, and Baracoa, and are currently in the process of supporting a third in Santiago.
Why is this project needed?School greening is a global trend that recognizes the potential of hands-on nature experiences to boost environmental awareness and improve the learning environment. The need is acute in Cuba, where government acknowledges the importance of environmental issues but does not include a formal environmental education component in school curricula. Cuban school grounds typically lack vegetation, and nature is seldom connected to the learning experience. Students have few opportunities for direct, positive involvement with nature. Through our experience, school greening, combined with environmental education and teacher training, can be a powerful force for environmental literacy and increased local capacity to address environmental problems.
DONATE to help Green a School GroundFor a total of $3,000 we can fund the entire school ground greening process for one school in Cuba. This covers the cost of the development of an environmental education campaign, teacher training, design and planning workshops, schoolyard blueprints, gardening tools, plants and seedlings. With your support we can improve environmental education in Cuba.
