Bolivia Health Program
Location: Sucre, Bolivia Through Planeterra, you can support a project that concentrates on helping Bolivian families in need of medical support. To date we have provided sufficient medicine and medical supplies to stock nine health clinics for up to five years.
This initiative will reduce Bolivia’s under-five mortality rate by providing outreach services to 846 communities, and will improve children’s healthcare in local health clinics. This project will directly benefit 90,000 children under five and 150,000 women of childbearing age. Training will also be provided to community health workers, clinics will be repaired, and provisions of medicines and medical equipment will be supplied to health clinics throughout Bolivia. Community Education Campaigns through television, radio, events, workshops, educational packages, videos, and school curriculums will also be developed to reach over 240,000 people.
Why is this project needed?Although Bolivia has made significant progress in improving the capacity of health care facilities, the country still has one of the highest children’s mortality rates in the Americas. Chronic malnutrition and anemia in children under three years of age still persists, and Bolivia’s childhood mortality rates are 11 times higher than those of Canada. Less than 65 per cent of all Bolivian births are attended by any type of health worker.
Chronic malnutrition and anemia in children under three years of age is common in Bolivia and nearly 10% of its children die before they reach the age of five. Sadly, the main causes of death for these children are completely preventable – diarrhea, pneumonia, malnutrition, measles, and malaria. There is an urgent need to reduce Bolivia’s incidence of childhood fatalities due to preventable diseases and illness.
