Kenya Community Tourism Project
Location: Kowour Village, Kenya This year for Earth Month we raised enough money to install 4 new water tanks for Kuwour Village!Through the development of our community-based tourism program, travellers are provided with an opportunity to participate in a family home stay in Kowour village. This cross-cultural experience enables travellers to take part in the daily lives of the villagers, and gain a deeper understanding of life in rural Kenya while providing economic benefit to over 20 families. The development of this program has provided an alternate means for economic stability, encourages community members to be proud of their cultural heritage, and enables them to provide for their families.

In addition to community-based tourism, we support initiatives that benefit the Kowour village and surrounding communities. By purchasing and installing 3,000-litre water tanks, time and energy spent hauling water for survival in the past can now be invested in education, further agricultural production, and other economic activities.
Why is this project needed?Families in Kowour village live mainly from subsistence agriculture, of which main crops include groundnuts, corn, sweet potatoes, cassava and cotton. Women in this village must also walk several hours each day to reach the nearest borehole for water, and to collect firewood for cooking. Despite the variety of products they produce, life in this region is harsh due to limited access to water, dependence on rain-fed agriculture, and minimal opportunities for economic diversity.
How you can helpTo visit this project you may take part in our community home stay on Gap Adventure’s
Cultural Kenya tour. Additional support through Planeterra will enable us to provide continued access to clean drinking water, needed materials for the local school and heath clinic, and support to other initiatives that will benefit villages throughout rural Kenya.
