Mpanga Primary School
Location: Lushoto, Tanzania The Mpanga Primary School is located in the Usambara Mountain region of Eastern Tanzania. The school has close to 800 students, ages 7 to 14. Planeterra has partnered with Friends of the Usambara Society, a local, grassroots organization that develops and promotes responsible tourism as a means to conserve and protect the area’s natural and cultural resources. Recent initiatives have led to renovations of the school, construction of new buildings, and tree planting to create outside areas that shade students during their classes.
Why is support of this school needed? The school receives very little funding, and limited resources have led to over-crowded classrooms, with 5-6 students sharing a single desk. Through support from Planeterra and generous travellers, materials are purchased in order for teachers, students and parents to build additional desks and classrooms, which create better learning environments.
Many of the local guides that work in tourism in this region attended the Mpanga Primary School. By working with the local community to improve the school and its environment, we hope to provide more students with an opportunity to continue their education and benefit from community-based tourism in this picturesque trekking region.
