Brazil Favela Project
Location: Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Located in the one of the poorest neighbourhoods of Latin America’s largest favela is a community-run center where children are provided with a safe and loving atmosphere, cultural and educational activities, nutritious meals and health care. This center is run by a group of women who are working to improve the quality of life for children and families in their own community. One of their main motivations is to help keep children off the streets, where there is pressure to join gangs involved in drug trafficking.
Travellers can support this project by participating on the
Project Brazil volunteer tour where 10 days are spent living in the community and volunteering in the favelas with this project.
Why is this project needed?Referred to as the “cidade maravilhosa” (Marvellous City), few cities enjoy such a dramatic setting as Rio de Janeiro. A city known for its vibrant culture, white sand beaches, deep blue water and steep mountains combine to give Rio one of the most stunning cityscapes in the world. Despite all of this, Rio is also known for the poverty that surrounds it. Favelas, or shantytowns, cover steep hillsides on both sides of the city where the poor live in squatter settlements with little opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.
With an estimated population of one million residents, life in the favelas is not easy. With no roads, no sewers, limited access to water and electricity and a social order that is imposed by drug lords, children have little hope of pulling themselves of out poverty. With your help we can help make a difference in the lives of children in the favelas.
