Children's Sea Bus
Location: Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos In partnership with the local Galapagos Guides Association, we are developing a project that will benefit over 7,100 local children and adults from Santa Cruz Island who have never had the opportunity to experience the beauty of the islands that surround them.
For a total of $20,000 we will be able to help purchase a boat to be used specifically for the purpose of operating bay-tours and day trips for local students (ages 8-14) and pay for first year operations. This will be combined with a 3-day educational component (classroom, visit to the highlands and a full day island-tour). This boat will be big enough to carry 20 people ~ 15 children will be invited to participate at a time, plus 3 parents, a national park representative and a volunteer Galapagos guide. Our goal is to offer this program to 100 children on a weekly basis. On each departure, a different Galapagos guide will be invited to volunteer their time and teach the students about the importance of conservation in the Galapagos Islands.
Why is this project needed? The principal economic activity in the Galapagos is tourism which started in the early 1970s when local people took visitors around on their fishing boats. Over the past three decades the number of visitors has increased to well over 100,000 tourists each year. People come from all over the world to appreciate the wildlife while the vast majority of its residents have never had the opportunity to do so.
DONATE to Project Sea BusHelp us raise the funds needed to purchase a boat which will provide the children from Santa Cruz with the opportunity to experience and enjoy all that the Galapagos has to offer. This educational program that will be used to teach them about the importance of environmental conservation, and to inspire a new generation of conservationists, decision makers, and future Galapagos guides.
