Mwandi Community Farm
Location: Livingstone, Zambia We have partnered with Happy Africa Foundation in support of the Mwandi Community Farm, located just outside of Livingstone, Zambia. Many people in this community are sick with illnesses, such as HIV/Aids, and rely on local volunteers for support and home-based care. They are visited once or twice a week, and taken to the local clinic if medical attention is needed. However, these care providers cannot afford to take much needed food or basic medical supplies to the patients, so the visits are often merely a gesture to help reassure the patient.
In response to this circumstance, the community at Mwandi was granted a plot of land by the government that is being developed into a farm to provide food for the local home based care initiative, which includes over 10 care givers and 30 patients. The land will be used to grow vegetables, other produce, and to rear chickens.
Why is this project needed?Mwandi is one of the poorest areas in Livingstone. Although farming is the main source of income for the majority of the local people, many can not afford to own their on land, so most farmers can only grow crops on very small plots next to their homes. For an average sized family of eight, farmers can struggle to feed their family year round. There are many people unable to generate an income themselves, due to illness or other circumstances, and therefore have no access to food. We are partnering with the Happy Africa Foundation to support the development of this community-based initiative.
How you can help?Our
Project Zambia and Safari tour provides an opportunity to volunteer at the Mwandi Community Farm, as well as other community projects in Livingstone. After giving back in Zambia, enjoy the wildlife and incredible landscapes that Botswana is famous for.
Donations will be used to develop the farm, through the addition of an irrigation system, and the purchasing of seeds and other materials needed to ensure that this community project can provide food and nourishment for those in need.
