New Delhi Streetkids Project
Location: New Delhi, India Through Planeterra’s partnership with Salaam Baalak Trust, we provide scholarships to young people who once lived and worked on the streets of Delhi. By providing vocational training in trade schools, universities and job-placements based on the area of each child’s individual interest, we can help break the cycle of poverty and give these children the opportunity to create a brighter future.
Travellers on
Project India, or other Gap Adventures India trips with free time in New Delhi can also choose to take part in an exciting city walk through the enchanting streets of the inner city of Paharganj and the New Delhi railway station led by a child who was once living and working on the streets. This walk takes travellers on a journey through the back streets of Delhi with a child who has been fully trained as a local guide. It’s a unique

way of engaging travellers in the lives of these children and provides an opportunity for young people to improve their communication and speaking skills.
Why is this project needed? With more than 18 million kids on the street, it is believed that India has the highest concentration of street children in the world. It is estimated that 400,000 of these children live and work on the streets in Delhi either because their parents are too poor to provide for them, they are orphans, or they have run away from home often to escape abuse. These children are malnourished, receive no formal education or medical treatment, and are involved in child labour from an early age. Many must also resort to prostitution, drugs and are often victims of sexual abuse. Through strategically placed contact points, shelters and a health post set up by a local organization, the program we support helps over 5,000 street children by providing them with clothes, food, health care, education, counseling, recreational activities, job skills training and job placements.
How you can helpTravelers can support this project by participating in the city walk while in Delhi. Through Planeterra, your donation to this project will help us provide scholarships to young people in vocational training in trade schools, universities and job-placements.
