Project: WOMEN'S WEAVING PROJECT
Country: SACRED VALLEY, PERU

Since 2005, G.A.P Adventures has been working with the women of the Ccaccaccollo community to develop a weaving project. Three women from the Ccaccaccollo Community took part in a three-month training course held by a local non-profit organization in which they learned ancient weaving techniques of the Incas including how to dye the wool using native flowers and plants. Each of the three women continued to teach the rest of the women what they had learned and today sixty women have joined together to create the Ccaccaccollo Women’s Weaving Project.

Most G.A.P Adventures groups are able to visit this community as part of the Sacred Valley Tour where they meet the women and learn about all the stages of the weaving process from hand-spinning the wool to dying the wool using natural dyes. Travellers also participate in a weaving demonstration and are given the opportunity to purchase high quality textiles directly from the women who made them.

By working with the Ccaccaccollo community we are encouraging women to be proud of their cultural heritage by showcasing their intricate weaving skills. This also enables them to help provide for their families and benefit from tourism in a way that avoids negative social and cultural impacts.

Planeterra Donation Breakdown
2007: Our donation will help to develop a running water system by purchasing the materials needed to provide the community with water from a nearby natural spring. Past donations to the Ccaccaccollo community through Planeterra include the purchase of eight alpacas to provide a continuous supply of wool, funding to provide a three-day dental clinic for children in the community and construction materials to build a communal house which is used for the women to weave indoors when it is raining.
